Bleeding From Mouth

What causes bleeding in the mouth?

• Gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, generally caused by plaque. This build-up of plaque is due to poor oral hygiene. One of the first signs of gingivitis is bleeding gums, however, many symptoms are painless, which is what makes this stage of periodontal disease so common. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits and cleanings can help treat and reverse gingivitis successfully.
• Periodontitis. Periodontitis, periodontal disease, occurs when gingivitis is left untreated, the disease will progress and the gums and teeth will start to separate even further from each other. This will lead to the development of deep gingival pockets, which can promote bacterial growth even further.
• Trauma. Trauma to the mouth and jaw may cause bleeding from the mouth. Trauma can be from getting stuck in the face by any object or simply running into or bumping into an object. This can leave a direct cut in the mouth which will cause bleeding or it may cause teeth to cut the inside of the mouth.

How do I stop bleeding in the mouth?

Depending on the severity of the bleeding, there are different approaches to stopping the bleeding.

• Properly clean hands before dealing with the affected area
• Rinse mouth with saline to help reduce swelling of gums
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reduce irritation to the gums
• Practice good oral hygiene
• If dealing with an open wound or cut, apply pressure
• Use gauze to help control bleeding
