I’m a strange person because I think a majority of people dread any type of dental work. I use to dread it but then I found this clinic, staffed and managed by people who go from being stranger to feeling like friends all in the blink of a eye.
A smile is how we introduce ourselves to the world. No matter the circumstances, it’s our smile that people see first. When you lose that, when you feel ashamed of how I look or bending my head when I mumbled to people because I felt like they knew I had no upper teeth. My looks changed completely. I looked in the mirror & could not recognize who I used to be.
I’ve had a lot of things go wrong in my life. From cancer, to Parkinson’s disease, to being a 9/11 paramedic & hate crime victim, I’ve spent about the last 15 years simply taking up space & existing. I wasn’t living. I was just nothing & I often thought of how much better life would be for my family if they no longer had to worry about me. That has been my life.
Then I drove past your clinic, saw you took Medicaid & now my life is different. Just looking in the mirror, I have started to see glimpses of who I use to be.
From the moment I walked in, I felt like I belonged.
You see when people are poor & on Medicaid, we get very used to being told no, made to feel ashamed or less then & a total burden. However you all have changed my heart & mind because you never once made me feel embarrassed, looked down on or judged. You simply made me feel like I’ve known you all forever & I was safe with each of you. You all made me feel seen. You made me feel heard. You made me feel alive.
I know it’s probably a very silly thing for a patient to absolutely love the staff at a dental clinic & write this email but I needed to stress to each of you that you smiles, your jokes, your sugar days, your dance days & your new daddy days (say hi to Forrest) made me feel like I deserved to have a smile. You made me feel like a real person that mattered in a time when there is so much hate & discontent. You each left such an impression on my life & in my heart, that I now know it’s ok to be me.
