Dr. Schmalz grew up in Fargo, ND, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU). After briefly working in the biomedical field in St. Paul, MN, he was drawn to dentistry by his older sister, a periodontist, and his deep-rooted desire to help patients restore their confidence and smiles. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 2015 and has been serving patients in South Dakota ever since.

As the owner of a large dental practice in Rapid City, SD since 2017, Dr. Schmalz made the intentional decision to step away from corporate dentistry to provide high-quality, affordable prosthetic solutions without sacrificing patient care. His engineering background allows him to design and create durable, cost-effective dental prosthetics, ensuring patients receive long-lasting restorations at an accessible price.

Dr. Schmalz loves South Dakota. He enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, biking or anything that involves the outdoors. He and his wife have 2 children and 1 lab.
