Post-Operative Care Guide
At Black Hills Dentures & Implants, we prioritize your recovery and comfort. Following these guidelines will help minimize discomfort, reduce swelling, and ensure proper healing after oral surgery and dental implant placement.

Managing Swelling & Bruising
After oral surgery, swelling in the gum tissue and facial area is common and may last up to one week. Swelling typically develops within the first 1–2 days post-procedure and peaks between days 2–4. Some mild bruising may appear near the surgical site around days 2–4 and can persist for a week.
- Ice Application: Apply ice packs externally over the cheek area, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24 hours. Avoid direct application to the surgical site inside the mouth.
- Do not lay down flat after surgery. Keep head elevated or at least above your chest to help reduce swelling.
- When to Call Us: If swelling seems excessive or concerning, contact our office for guidance.

Pain Management
Most post-surgical discomfort can be managed with ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol). These medications not only reduce pain but also help minimize swelling.
- Ibuprofen: Typically 600mg every 6 hours, up to 5–7 days post-operatively, if medically appropriate.
- Acetaminophen: Typically 500mg every 6 hours, up to 5–7 days, if no contraindications exist.
- Prescriptions from your Dentist: Sometimes depending on procedure, medications are prescribed, such as steroids, to help with reducing swelling and inflammation (if medically appropriate) that will be prescribed for the next 3-5 days.
Antibiotics & Healing Support
If prescribed, antibiotics should begin on the day of surgery.
- Take with drinks such as sprite or 7-up or with probiotics to prevent stomach discomfort.
- If gastrointestinal upset or diarrhea occurs, contact our office.
Diet & Eating Guidelines
A healthy diet promotes healing and minimizes discomfort.
- Stick to soft, cool foods for up to a week: Yogurt, smoothies, ice cream Soup, pasta, scrambled eggs, oatmeal Cottage cheese
- Avoid: Crunchy, sticky, and sharp foods (chips, crackers, nuts, rice, seeded fruits). Do not use a straw—suction can disrupt healing.
Oral Hygiene After Oral Surgery
Good oral hygiene is critical for preventing infection and promoting healing.
- Brush twice daily (beginning next day as surgery).
- Warm salt water with gentle swishing after meals is recommended.
Oral Hygiene After Dental Implant Placement
Proper oral hygiene is essential for the long-term success of your dental implant. Maintaining good oral hygiene will help ensure lasting function and health.
- Brush your teeth twice a day, starting the same day as your implant placement. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle technique to clean around the implant.
- Follow specific care instructions from your Dentist to keep the implant free from plaque buildup.
- If you have any concerns about implant care, ask your surgeon for brushing techniques and guidance.
