Pre-Procedure Guidelines for Oral Surgery & Sedation
To ensure a smooth procedure and optimal healing, please follow these pre-operative instructions before your appointment at Black Hills Dentures & Implants.

Medications
Take all prescribed medications as usual with a minimal amount of water, unless directed otherwise by your surgeon or primary care doctor.
Fasting Guidelines Based on Sedation Type

Intravenous (IV) Sedation:
- No food or drinks for 8 hours before your procedure.
- If scheduled for morning surgery, do not eat or drink after midnight the night before.
- Clear liquids (water, tea, apple juice—anything transparent) may be consumed up to 4 hours before surgery.
Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) Sedation:
- No food or drink (including water) for 3 hours before your appointment, unless instructed otherwise.
Lifestyle & Safety Precautions
Smoking & Alcohol Use:
- No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery—ideally, reduce or quit as soon as possible before your appointment.
- No alcohol or recreational drugs for at least 72 hours, as these may interfere with anesthesia medications.
Transportation & Rest:
- A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment, remain in the office during your procedure, and drive you home.
- After your surgery, plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
- No driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for 24 hours following sedation.
What to Wear & Bring
- Wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow.
- Low-heeled shoes are recommended for stability.
- Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures before surgery.
- Avoid wearing lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of your procedure.
Health Considerations & Cancellations
- If you are experiencing any illness—such as a cold, sore throat, stomach issues, or flu-like symptoms, please notify our office before your procedure.
- If you need to reschedule, please provide at least 48 hours' notice to allow us to accommodate other patients.
Important Notes for Women
- Some antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. If prescribed, check with your pharmacist about potential interactions.
