Jaw Pain Relief in Rapid City, SD

There are many different reasons you may be suffering from jaw pain. One of the most common causes of jaw pain is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). TMJ is a condition that can cause pain and discomfort. Symptoms include pain while chewing, jaw tenderness, and possible lockjaw. However, not all jaw pain is associated with TMJ. If you have any jaw pain that doesn’t resolve on its own, you will need to see a dentist for an official diagnosis and treatment plan. Black Hills Dentures & Implants offers affordable, $99 emergency exams, X-rays included, to diagnose jaw pain of any type.

  • What causes jaw pain?

Jaw pain can be the result of a variety of factors, including:

    • Injuries and/or trauma
    • Tooth abscesses and/or other infections
    • Periodontal (gum) disease
    • Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding

Other issues may also be causing pain and discomfort. Please contact your dentist or healthcare professional if the pain persists.

  • What jaw pain can be treated at the dentist?

Jaw pain resulting from bruxism, TMJ, periodontal disease, and tooth abscess can be treated at the dentist’s office. Bruxism can be treated with a night guard to reduce nightly teeth grinding. Night guards can also be used to relieve pain associated with TMJ. If the jaw pain is caused by periodontal disease, there are two ways it can be treated. Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is recognized as the standard treatment for periodontitis. The second method, used in more severe cases, includes bone grafting and is often required when bacteria and plaque have reached the jawbone and caused deterioration and decay. A tooth abscess is a buildup of pus from a bacterial infection that can lead to tooth loss and jaw infections.

  • What jaw injuries require hospital attention?

If the jaw pain is caused by external trauma, it can often be accompanied by head trauma. If you are experiencing dizziness, persistent headaches, and nausea, contact your local healthcare professional or visit the nearest emergency room.
